#SATW – Sewing Around The World / Guest Contribution from Bianca about the Silvia Coatigan

Today I would like to introduce you to Bianca from “Sleepless in Bavaria“. Maybe you already know Bianca as you can admire her and her great sewing projects regularly on Instagram and on her blog, where she writes about her sewingpassion in German and English, and is regularly filled by her with beautiful pictures and reviews of wonderful self-sewn garments.

Sewing Around The World

I’m very happy that Bianca is another contributor to our “Sewing Around The World Tour” and sewed up a Silvia Coatigan. In this context she wrote a review that is published below as a kind of guest contribution to schnittchen patterns blog.

If you want to see more finished Silvias, then have a look at our Silvia Pinterest board. Here we compiled some of the beautiful Silvia Coatigans made by seamstresses all over the world…

Guest contribution from Bianca @Sleepless in Bavaria

Good morning, dear ones and hello from Upper Bavaria! My name is Bianca and I blog at www.sleeplessinbavaria.com. Today, I’m very fortunate to contribute with a review on schnittchen patterns blog. When Silke asked me at the beginning of the year, if I would like to do so, I said immediately “YES”.

I also immediately said that I would like to sew a jacket or a coat and in fall I wanted to submit my article. And now? …Autumn is here and now I can show you my new coatigan!

I sewed Silvia – this coatigan is my most favorite sewing pattern for a transitional jacket and it’s the third time I’ve been sewing it. I have chosen a wool fabric that I’ve had in my stock for at least 3 years and a simple lining, I probably have in stock just as long.

I took upon myself ironing all pattern pieces of the coat with some fusible interfacing that is suitable for coat fabrics. So the coatigan has a little more stand and will not be crumpled when I throw it on the back seat in my car… Then I also ironed the hems for the sleeves, the facings and the front and back parts with a slightly firmer fusible interfacing.

Doing this it makes life a bit easier when lining the coat and above all everything looks super neat and professional! Since I’m actually planning to wear this coatigan until snow comes (hopefully in February !!), I thought I would line the coat with a fleece blanket. This is pretty quick and easy to do: buy a fleece blanket cut all lining parts out of the fleece blanket, then sew them together just like the lining and then put the fleece over the lining and sew on the facings as well. Done is your new super warm jacket =)

I’ve been wearing my new Silvia EVERY DAY since I finished it. And – like icing on the cake – I have sewed a matching belt out of some fabric left. Whereby I have to say, I think the coatigan looks very chic even without a belt.

If you are still thinking about which coat you will sew this year, I can recommend the Silvia Coatigan from the heart. This coat is put together very quickly and looks chic in any fabric.
