#SATW Sewing Around The World – Mirjam / Switzerland

This is one of these great sewing-stories that perfectly goes with our Sewing Around The World project: Mirjam got a sewing machine as a present from her boyfriend. She started to learn sewing and slowly got crazy about it. So crazy that in the end, she quit her job as a teacher and started to learn sewing professionally. She also started her blog Miushka on which she writes about her lovely projects and that catched our eye already for a while. So, no wonder that Mirjam had to be part of Sewing Around The World.

After she decided to take part she opted for a pattern set with two patterns very easy to sew: the Annalisa combination consisting of a knee-length A-shaped skirt with side slant pockets and an elastic waistband and a shirt with bat sleeves.

The fabrics for these two garments she found at Lilly Paris , a lovely fabric shop in Switzerland with a beautifully selected choice of fabrics from international brands.

For the Shirt Annalisa Mirjam used a supersoften marine-white striped Kimsa sweat with printed cherries. And even if it was painstaking to fit the stripes to match (this is always the crux of beautifully striped fabrics …) so convincing is the result we find!

And as beautiful as the shirt is the skirt because for Skirt Annalisa Mirjam used the finest Kokka Double Gauze which she also got at Lilly Paris.

She photographed her finished clothes together and then also combined them with other garments. So she created this fanstastic shirt-jeans-combi with the golden cherries and the skirt with a simple white blouse.

Merci vielmol Mirjam and Janine from Lilly Paris for this great contribution and your support! And for those of you who want to know more about Mirjam of course we also send her our little interview.

When did you start to sew and why? How did you learn to sew?

I started to sew about three years ago. My friend gave me a sewing machine for christmas present. Soon I quit my job and started to learn sewing at the school in Zurich. Since my little babyboy was born, half a year now, I don’t have so much time any more for sewing. Or I sew babygarments now … unless it is more difficult to organise my sewing time, it is more fun for me now!

What are your favourite clothes? Do you have a fable for something?

My very first garments were colorful and bright. Now I try to find a good balance in my closet – with colorful fabrics and also garments which you can comine well.

What is the sewing project you like the most?

Always the one I am working at the moment.

Do you only sew for you or also for other people (husband, children, …)?

I love sewing for myself, a luxury I allow myself. But, as mentioned, sometimes I sew for my boy and I also sew a button on for my boyfriend …

From where do you get your ideas? Do you buy patterns or do you invent your own ones?

In school, the main emphasis is on design and construction. At home, I get my inspiration from patterns – as balancing. There are so many fantastic Indi-Designers with a wonderful choice of patterns!
