#SATW Sewing Around The World – Amanda / Australien

Coco-Jacket-Schnittchen

Present yourself a little bit

Ahoi hoi! My name is Amanda and I’m currently living in Canberra, Australia with my husband, two dogs and cat. I’m a high school drama and history teacher by trade but now work in museums. When I’m not sewing up a storm I’m indulging in a wide variety of nerdy hobbies, learning to knit and training for my first 5km run. Each November I have the pleasure of facilitating a month-long Instagram challenge called #bpSewvember.

When did you start to sew and why? How did you learn to sew?

After a short period of making self-drafted skirts at uni, I rediscovered the joy of sewing four years ago after helping my friend make my wedding dress. It took me a good six months to work up the courage to try something myself but since then I’ve been hooked! Armed with google, youtube and a penchant for asking awkward questions at fabric stores I have been slowly teaching myself the fun of taking pieces of cloth and creating something amazing. Who knew sewing would be so addictive?!

What are your favourite clothes? Do you have a fable for something?

This is a tough call – I am most at home in jeans, tees, Chuck Taylors and some kind of rad jacket but I love getting frocked up. The older I get the more open I am to trying something sassy, which is always fun!

What is the sewing project you like the most?

Do I have to pick a favourite? I love all the skills and techniques required for making jackets and tailored pieces, the speed and fun of tees and dresses and the challenge of working with lovely and unusual fabrics. I’m currently psyching myself up to try and make jeans. Who knows – maybe they will end up being my favourite? But really, it’s whatever I’m working on at any given moment. I have the attention span of a squirrel on sherbet so there is no room for consistent favourites.

Do you only sew for you or also for other people?

Truthfully, I am one of the most selfish seamstresses out there. I have made a few pieces for friends of mine but am such a perfectionist that it stresses me out. I do want to say for the record that I recently offered to make my husband a button up shirt with some gorgeous Peruvian Pima cotton and he turned me down. I take that as a sign to keep sewing for myself – bwah ha ha!

From where do you get your ideas? Do you buy patterns or do you invent your own ones?

I am inspired by people I see out and about, awesome bloggers, Instagram friends and of course the amazing fabulousness of Pinterest. Pattern wise, I wish I had amazing drafting skills but this lady is content to use existing patterns and have some fun!
